We arose at 4,15 am - a pretty awful time in anyone's books and took a taxi to Vienna airport.
Our destination was Lyon with a 1 day stopover in Rome. When planning the trip the choice boiled down to a stopover either in Luton or Rome if we were to get airline tickets at anything like a reasonable price. We chose an Air Berlin flight to Rome even though we had never been to Luton.
We took the train to Stazione Termini and trundled our somewhat heavy baggage to our hotel at about 10.30 am where we could not check in but could at least change into cooler clothing and leave our baggage. Rome is sunny and hot today.
The double decker tour buses were packed so we did a self guided walking tour which took in some of the big sites. With such a short amount of time we did not go into any monument, - just looked from the outside. We left out the Vatican.
Our tour took in the Collisseum nearby which we had a very pleasant snack. We then walked past the Forum to take a peek at the Tiber. We crossed onto Tiber Island and back again over another bridge. Somehow we found the Trevi Fountain - by this time the crowds were a bit overwhelming. We walked around the Pantheon and onto the Spanish Steps. After taking a few photos we returned exhausted to our hotel for an early dinner alfresco. Dinner was good and it did include spaghetti. We had an early night and set our alarm for 5.15 - another early flight tomorrow - this time from Ciampino airport.
This short visit to Rome was well worth the effort.
Our next blog will be from Roanne, France and will cover a few days.
