Q: 28 May

We had chosen to do the tour of the place at Peterhof in the morning. This was a good choice. It is similar to and is often compared with the palace at Versailles. The gardens are huge and immaculately maintained. The tulips were near perfect possibly due to the cool moist conditions. The opulence of the interior décor exceeded that (in our opinion) of both the Hermitage and Pushkin.

We returned to ship for midday feeding time and then took the shuttle bus to the city were we were released on 3 hrs parole. This was good preparation for our final release tomorrow.

We were able to walk the streets at a good rate which comes as a pleasure after so many guided tours at the pace of a snail. We followed the canals around and got to admire the city architecture. Sadly it rained on and off and it was cold so it was hard to get that “Venice of the North” feeling. Others on the ship had opted for a canal boat tour. We relaxed in a bar over a Russian beer and wine. The bars we have found so far are not as I had imagined and are really restaurants where you are allowed to drink. They have a small bar at the side.

We spent time in the evening to pack and to settle the bill for our extra drinks (drinks bought outside dinner time is extra) and optional tours. No time to get onto the internet and update blog. The ship’s satellite internet connection is a bit slow especially for uploads.
