R: 27 May

This morning we did a tour of Pushkin (What the locals call the Summer Palace) The early start was well worth the effort as the crowds were less than half that of the Hermitage. We made the error of leaving our umbrellas in the bus planning to save time by not having to check them in. We thought we would just be hopping off the bus and going into the palace. This was not to be so and we had to queue for about ½ hour in the rain. A kind American guy lent Alison a brolly which stopped us from getting totally drenched.

Inside flash photography was banned. The artwork not so impressive as the Hermitage, but the opulence of the décor was equal or greater. It does nothing to create any respect or admiration for the royalty that invested so much wealth in their home.

In the evening we went to the Cossak show in a tent on the wharf. It was pretty well done and quite varied with lots of singing and different dance styles. It included vodka at intermission and I was surprised to actually enjoy it so I had a few more. The show improved after intermission.
