Then in pm we did a tour of the Kremlin, Red Square and GUM department store, followed by a concert of traditional Russian instruments.
The tours require a rather long bus journey from the river port to the city. Long in time because traffic is pretty appalling. The concert was very professional and included a female solo vocalist. The tour gave us a taste of what is to come with multiple tour groups everywhere and with us following our leader like a flock of sheep. Its all much of a new experience for Alison and me. We do get let free now and again to wander on our own and lose ourselves.
The Kremlin was certainly worth a visit and we were taken into a few of the churches with our guide communicating via short range radio to our earpieces. The Tsar bell is the worlds heavyiest -over 200 tonnes, with an 11 tonne chunk broken out caused by overenthusiastic application of water during a major fire which had heated the bell.
In evening back on board ship we managed to get internet access. The ship has a wireless LAN provided with satellite connection.
It is becoming apparent that controlling food intake is going to take some self discipline. I think I have a problem here though Alison should be OK. Grog (house wine and Russian beer) is free with meals.
When no land based tours are available we get lectures/lessons a bit like school.
